2010 CE Workshop |
Instruction Level IntermediateProposed Audience Psychologists, behavior analysts, speech therapists, teachers, or other professionals or paraprofessionals who work with or are interested in verbal behavior.
Program Description This workshop will focus primarily on the basic concepts of the book Verbal Behavior by B.F. Skinner (1957). In this book, Skinner described language or verbal behavior by the function language serves in various situations or stimulus conditions. Describing language in this manner has proved to be very useful for remedial language instruction in persons, especially children, with defective language repertoires. The workshop will begin with a brief review of the history of the development of Verbal Behavior as a subject matter and training technique. The majority of the workshop will be spent discussing the basic concepts that constitute verbal behavior and the elementary verbal operants (echoic, mand, tact, intraverbal, textual (reading) and transcriptive (writing)). Examples of verbal behavior training will also be incorporated into this discussion and participants will complete exercises to use concepts presented to create verbal behavior training programs.
Learning Objectives On completion of the workshop the participants should be able to: 1. identify instances of verbal and non-verbal behavior based on Skinner’s definition of Verbal Behavior. 2. define the primary verbal operants. 3. identify examples of the primary verbal operants. 4. create a simple training procedure for the echoic, mand, tact and intraverbal operants.
The Presenter Mark Stafford, M.A., LPA, BCBA Mr. Stafford earned his Bachelor's (1977) and Master's (1990) Degrees in Applied Behavior Analysis from the psychology department at Western Michigan University. His graduate work was done under the direction of Dr. Jack Michael a leader in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis and Verbal Behavior. While at WMU, Mr. Stafford had the good fortune to work along side and co-author with Dr. Mark Sundberg, a current leading expert in the field of Verbal Behavior and autism treatment. Drs. Sundberg and Michael, sparked his interest in B.F. Skinner's book Verbal Behavior and the application of the principals presented in that book to the training of language skills in children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Mr. Stafford moved to North Carolina in 1991 and practiced for several years as a Licensed Psychological Associate providing behavior analysis consultation to group homes for children and adults and to families of children with developmental disabilities. He has also worked as a Staff Psychologist at the Murdoch Developmental Center. Mark has served on the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Association for Behavior Analysis since 2007 and is currently serving as President Elect. Mr. Stafford took the position as Director of Programs at the Mariposa School for Children with Autism in May 2010, where he oversees the development and implementation of Verbal Behavior and Applied Behavior Analysis programming for students with autism.
