Instruction Level IntermediateProposed Audience Psychologists involved in the development, supervision and management of assessment and treatment procedures and applied research with people with behavioral disorders. Program Description This workshop will compare and contrast functional assessments (FA) and the experimental analysis of behavior problems and strategies for the management of treatment plans that address them. Functional assessments will be described from their origins in early experimental work through their newest appearance in the Positive Behavior Support movement. They will be discussed across settings including homes, schools, and facilities for people with intellectual disabilities.
Learning Objectives On completion of the workshop the participants will be able to: 1. List three historical issues about the Functional Assessment (FA), including its scientific, legal, and advocacy origins. 2. List three differences among the terms Functional Assessment (FA), the experimental analysis of behavior (EAB), and Positive Behavior Support (PBS). 3. List three differences between the indirect/descriptive and direct/structured forms of functional assessment.
The Presenter Robert M. “Duke” Schell, Ph.D., LP-HSP, BCBA Duke Schell is a NC Licensed Psychologist and nationally certified Behavior Analyst. As Director of Psychology at the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center in Morganton, NC, he works with a team of fifteen clinical staff providing psychology and behavior analysis services to people with significant cognitive disabilities and related developmental disabilities, including autism. Many of the Riddle Center residents have severe behavioral, psychiatric and medical challenges. He has provided consultations to over 100 adults and children in community settings including homes, group homes, work settings, state psychiatric centers and nursing homes. His is a past president of the NC chapter of the American Association on Intellectual Disabilities (formerly AAMR), past Psychology Division Chair of Southeastern AAMR, and twice past president of the NC chapter of the Association for Behavior Analysis. In addition Duke is a Research Associate with the Human Development Research & Training Institute at the Riddle Center, on the Advisory Council to the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, Masters Degree Program in Applied Behavior Analysis, and a Consultant with Carolina Behavior Analysis and Support Center. He has served as an expert witness in cases related to behavior analysis and active treatment in ICF/MR settings and has worked as a management consultant with public residential facilities. Duke has published in the areas of staff management, behavioral treatment of self injury and hoarding, integrated behavioral and pharmacological treatment, and positive behavior support, and has made delivered over 50 presentations and workshops at state, regional and national conferences. He is the recipient of the NCAAMR Award for leadership and the NCABA Fred S. Keller Award for Excellence in Behavior Analysis.

Credit 3 Hours Category A Continuing Education Credit for NC psychologists and/or 3 hours BACB Approved Continuing Education Credit.
Attendance To receive credit, you must be present for the entire workshop, and you must sign the sign-in and sign-out sheets. No credit will be given for participants who are more than 15 minutes late at the beginning of the workshop. No credit will be given to participants who leave before the close of the workshop. You must complete an evaluation form and turn it in at the close of the workshop to receive credit. Participants will receive a certificate documenting their attendance following the workshop and credit certificates will be mailed to the address provided during registration.
Registration Deadline and Refund Policy There is currently space available in this workshop. Registration will be limited to 35 people. If you register on or before August 26th, 2008 there is a special early registration fee of $55.00 to attend this workshop. There are also special rates available for anyone who would like to attend both this workshop and another workshop on Friday, September 12th , 2008 from 1:30 pm to 4:30pm in Winston Salem. A student rate of $25.00 is available with proof of current full time student status. You will receive a full refund for cancellation received on or before August 29th, 2008. No refund will be provided for cancellation received on or after August 30th, 2008.

Continuing Education Credit The program is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Psychological Association and the North Carolina Association for Behavior Analysis. The North Carolina Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The North Carolina Psychological Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This program is offered for 3 hours of continuing education credit. In addition, this workshop is BACB approved for 3 hours of continuing education credits.
