2010 CE Workshop

Proposed Audience  Behavior analysts, psychologists, and other mental health professionals

 

Program Description  This workshop will involve discussion of issues in diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of repetitive behavior disorders, including tic disorders, nervous habits, and stuttering. After information is presented on diagnostic issues, behavioral assessment and functional assessment strategies will be discussed. Next the habit reversal procedure as applied to each of the disorders will be described. Finally, other approaches to treatment that complement habit reversal will be described. These approaches to behavioral assessment and treatment will be illustrated with research studies conducted by the author.

 

Learning Objectives On completion of the workshop the participants should be able to:

1. Identify and categorize the defining characteristics of tics, nervous habits, and stuttering.

2. Accurately describe the habit reversal procedure applied to tics, nervous habits, and stuttering.

3. Describe and demonstrate functional approaches to assessment and intervention for repetitive behavior disorders.

 

The Presenter  Raymond G. Miltenberger, Ph.D., BCBA

Dr. Miltenberger received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Western Michigan University in 1985 after completing a pre-doctoral internship at the Kennedy Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Currently, he is the director of the Master’s Program in Applied Behavior Analysis at the University of South Florida. Dr. Miltenberger is president of the Association for Behavior Analysis International and serves on the Executive Council of Florida Association for Behavior Analysis. He is on the editorial boards of JABA, Behavioral Interventions, and Journal of Positive Behavioral Interventions and serves as an associate editor for Behavior Analysis in Practice and Education and Treatment of Children. Dr. Miltenberger’s research focuses on teaching safety skills to children and individuals with mental retardation, analysis and treatment of repetitive behavior disorders, and functional assessment and treatment of problem behaviors. He has published over 175 journal articles and chapters, has co-edited a text on analysis and treatment of tics and repetitive behavior disorders, and has written a behavior modification textbook, now in its fourth edition. Dr. Miltenberger has received a number of awards for his teaching and research including the 2008 APA Division 25 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Applied Behavioral Research and the 2009 Outstanding Mentorship Award from the Association for Behavior Analysis International.

Credit  3 Hours Category A Continuing Education Credit for NC psychologists and/or 3 hours Type II BACB Approved Continuing Education Credit.

 

Attendance  To receive credit, you must be present for the entire workshop, and you must sign the sign-in and sign-out sheets. No credit will be given for participants who are more than 15 minutes late at the beginning of the workshop. No credit will be given to participants who leave before the close of the workshop. You must complete an evaluation form and turn it in at the close of the workshop to receive credit. Participants will receive a certificate documenting their attendance following the workshop and credit certificates will be mailed to the address provided during registration.

 

Registration Deadline and Refund Policy  There is currently space available in this workshop. Registration will be limited to 40 people. If you register on or before January 22nd, 2010 there is a special early registration fee of $55.00 to attend this workshop. There are also special rates available for anyone who would like to attend both this workshop and any of the four post-conference workshops offered on Friday February 19th, 2010 from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Continuing Education Credit  The program is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Psychological Association and the North Carolina Association for Behavior Analysis.  The North Carolina Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  The North Carolina Psychological Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This program is offered for 3 hours of continuing education credit. In addition, this workshop is BACB approved for 3 hours of Type II continuing education credits.
