Instruction Level IntermediateProposed Audience Psychologists, counselors, teachers, behavior specialists, behavior analysts, administrators, or other professionals or paraprofessionals who work with varied populations in varied settings.
Program Description This workshop will focus on the relationship among the Behavior Analyst Certification Board's (BACB) Guidelines for Responsible Conduct for Behavior Analysts, the BACB's Professional Disciplinary Standards, and the APA’s ethical responsibilities for psychologists. Data from the BACB, APA and other sources will be reviewed and discussed by the participants to apply in their everyday use of applied behavior analysis. The "Guidelines" and "Standards" will also be discussed in view of their impact on the ethical use of behavior analytic practices. In addition, the participants will review case examples that raise questions of ethical responsibility specifically in the context of non-behavior analytic procedures and therapies that may be provided to people with intellectual and related developmental disabilities.
Learning Objectives On completion of the workshop the participants should be able to: 1. describe the relationships between APA and BACB sources of ethics descriptions for clinicians in behavior analysis and psychology. 2. describe how to review and analyze their own behavior within work contexts such as schools and residential facilities and determine their most likely ethical problems. 3. identify and list at least three strategies to effectively work with colleagues, ethics materials and other sources to discuss and attempt to resolve ethical issues.
The Presenter R.M. “Duke”. Schell, Ph.D., BCBA-D Dr. Schell received his BA in psychology in 1977 from the University of Florida with Dr. Hank Pennypacker as his undergraduate advisor. Following two years of work at Western Carolina Center with Dr. Judy Favell he returned to graduate school at Florida State University to work with Jon Bailey. After completing his PhD in psychology in 1987 he began a career of work with people with intellectual and related developmental disabilities, including people with autism and dual diagnoses. Dr. Schell has worked in public residential facilities, day work centers and community homes in Florida, Georgia, Kansas, South Carolina and North Carolina in varied clinical and administrative positions including the Director Psychology at the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center for the past 13 years. He coordinates a department of fifteen psychology staff providing behavior analysis services to about 330 people with severe intellectual disabilities and related behavioral and psychiatric disorders. In addition he coordinates an internship program for psychology students from the high school level through post-graduate work. He has been President of the North Carolina Association for Behavior Analysis on two occasions and is the NCABA Liaison to ABAI. He has been President of the NC chapter of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Chair of the Psychology Division of the Southeastern region of AAIDD. Dr. Schell has provided community consultations, expert witness work, and been involved with Denny Reid through the Carolina Behavior Analysis and Support Center in statewide efforts in SC to improve positive behavioral support services to people with ID. He has provided workshops at ABAI on the topic of ethics since 2003 and at NCABA since 2004. He provided his first workshop on the “ethics of behavior modification” in Winfield, KS in 1991.

Credit 3 Hours Category A Continuing Education Credit for NC psychologists and/or 3 hours Type II BACB Approved Continuing Education Credit.
Attendance To receive credit, you must be present for the entire workshop, and you must sign the sign-in and sign-out sheets. No credit will be given for participants who are more than 15 minutes late at the beginning of the workshop. No credit will be given to participants who leave before the close of the workshop. You must complete an evaluation form and turn it in at the close of the workshop to receive credit. Participants will receive a certificate documenting their attendance following the workshop and credit certificates will be mailed to the address provided during registration.
Registration Deadline and Refund Policy There is currently space available in this workshop. Registration will be limited to 40 people. If you register on or before January 22nd, 2010 there is a special early registration fee of $55.00 to attend this workshop. There are also special rates available for anyone who would like to attend both this workshop and any of the four post-conference workshops offered on Friday February 19th, 2010 from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Continuing Education Credit The program is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Psychological Association and the North Carolina Association for Behavior Analysis. The North Carolina Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The North Carolina Psychological Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This program is offered for 3 hours of continuing education credit. In addition, this workshop is BACB approved for 3 hours of Type II continuing education credits.
