Program Description  The field of behavior analysis has a long history of evaluating and demonstrating the effectiveness of a variety of strategies and procedures to enhance the skill acquisition of children with autism.  Parents and teachers must be fluent in these procedures in order to affect positive change in child performance.  This presentation will identify proactive interventions to teach children with autism during daily interactions and natural routines.  Attendees will practice specific skills related to conducting preference assessments, embedding preferences within learning activities and using prompting and reinforcement procedures.

 

Learning Objectives  On completion of the workshop the participants will be able to:

1. Describe and demonstrate  the procedures to conduct preference assessment with children with autism.

2. Describe and demonstrate the procedures to embed preferences within learning activities.

3. Describe and demonstrate the use of prompting and reinforcement procedures to teach young children with autism.

 

The Presenter  Maureen Schepis, Ph.D., BCBA

Maureen M. Schepis, Ph.D. received her doctorate degree in education with a specialization in teacher training and assistive technology from George Mason University.  She is currently the Director of the Center for Early Communication and Learning in Morganton, NC, an assistive technology resource center for families and service providers with a focus on children birth to five.  She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and licensed teacher and provides private consultation to families, service providers and school systems.  She has been in the field of developmental disabilities for over 30 years and has published over 50 research journal articles or book chapters.  She serves on the editorial boards of Evidence-Based Communication Assessment and Intervention and Behavior Analysis in Practice. She was the recipient of the Fred S. Keller Excellence in Behavior Analysis Award in 2002 and the NC Assistive Technology Award of Excellence in 2006. She has served as President and Secretary-Treasurer of the North Carolina Association Behavior Analysis Affiliated Chapter.  Her research interests focus on interventions for children with autism, assistive technology and language development.

Credit  3 Hours Category A Continuing Education Credit for NC psychologists and/or 3 hours BACB Approved Continuing Education Credit.

 

Attendance  To receive credit, you must be present for the entire workshop, and you must sign the sign-in and sign-out sheets. No credit will be given for participants who are more than 15 minutes late at the beginning of the workshop. No credit will be given to participants who leave before the close of the workshop. You must complete an evaluation form and turn it in at the close of the workshop to receive credit. Participants will receive a certificate documenting their attendance following the workshop and credit certificates will be mailed to the address provided during registration.

 

Registration Deadline and Refund Policy  There is currently space available in this workshop. Registration will be limited to 40 people. If you register on or before January 25th, 2008 there is a special early registration fee of $55.00 to attend this workshop. There are also special rates available for anyone who would like to attend both this workshop and any of the four post-conference workshops offered on Tuesday February 19th, 2008 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Continuing Education Credit  The program is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Psychological Association and the North Carolina Association for Behavior Analysis.  The North Carolina Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  The North Carolina Psychological Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This program is offered for 3 hours of continuing education credit. In addition, this workshop is BACB approved for 3 hours of  continuing education credits.
